CarbonScape Data

CarbonScape is the latest data kinetic soundscape installation created by h0nh1m aka Chris Cheung. It consists of 18 tracks of granular synthesized sound samples. They are collected from the sound sources where carbon footprints left, for example the sound from the jet engine, steam from the factory and horn of the ship etc… The finale is composed of all tracks blending into the soundscape.

It is a visualisation of carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the atmosphere according to the NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration). In 2017, the concentration of CO2 soared to its highest of the past three million years, with industrialization and the use of fossil fuels being one of the major factors. The installation arranged in a bamboo forest like landscape, with the changing ambience drone noises, imitates chimneys frequently found in power plants and factories, with black spheres indicating CO2 levels around the globe. Immersing the viewer in an environment taken over with chimneys, CarbonScape thinks about what our position as humans can be, while the earth’s capacity for life reaches its limits.

Haptic Organ – commissioned by Fashion Walk

‘Haptic’ originates from the greek word ‘haptikos’: any sort of information received through touch is haptic, as it appears in this installation, it is based on kinesthetic (expressing force or position) communication, in which the motion of the hand initiates visual displays and sound variations, thus allowing audiences to receive familiar feedbacks to learn how to operate the installation as an instrument. The creative duo COLLECTIVE and h0nh1m designed Haptic Organ with an intention to make music tangible, visible, sharable among each other to encourage group interactive moments in celebration of the Christmas season.

It is in the form of a 4-meter tall spiraling instrument with the recognizable elements of the strings; music notes are prompted with the aid of the non-contact haptic interface that detects hands movement in the air, while each of the 20 transparent tubes, like a pipe organ, wrap round the spiral, each encased with a metallic ball which rises up and down, dancing inside the tube through initiated air movement by hand motion; users received the visual feedback of dancing balls and can freely improvise his or her music with the aid of eight sensors giving eight notes across an octave, in addition to four that gives tones of musical instruments like strings, woodwinds, harps and sleigh bells, with volume controllable with ascending and descending movements of the hands over the haptic interfaces.

h0nh1m creates the music as a blessing for joy and peace in the Christmas season. Borrowing the melody of ‘Happy Xmas (War is Over)’ written by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, it was a work of peace activism, looking towards for peace, equality, the end of wars and discrimination.

Prismverse’s collection of splendors in our mother nature includes the galaxy and distant stars, rare gemstones, glistens of flowing water, and refracted light beams, together brings in an unprecedented experience and aesthetics of shines. The title of the installation consists of 2 core ideas; Prism is the medium that translates light and Verse is time-space dimension.

RadianceScape Live! is an audiovisual performance that visualizes live radiation data of different major cities (New York, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Berlin and Paris…) in comparing to Chernobyl and Fukushima. It extended the project RadianceScape 2016 installation which featured the graphical score of the radiation data of Chernobyl and Fukushima in 2016. The year to mourn the 30th and the 5th anniversary of the nuclear disaster respectively.

*The RadianceScape project was first initiated in 2014 and presented with XCEED.

VaporScape is an interactive soundscape installation created for the NikeLab’s The Vision-Airs Pavilion in Art Central Hong Kong.

Abstract:
Vaporization is about the changing of state, thus turning liquid to vapor where it occurs in our body. We breath; we sweat; heartbeats hit and blood flows. That’s how the internal circulation work and regular the body temperature. The heat evaporates through sweating hence for the result. Our body work like an orchestra, the micro sounds are amazing.

VaporScape is an interactive ambience sound installation that contains 4 layers of sound. The sensors react with the humidity of the room, temperature on audience’s skin and translate the vaporization rate into the sound modulation. It emphasis the biomechanics process of human body and embodied the generative soundscape self-containing in a vaporized atmosphere.
